Interior / Exterior

This series began in 1975 with the paper, carbon paper, and ink collage, the first image in the row immediately below. I was living with my parents in an apartment in NYC, and they were away for the weekend. So I was thinking about an idea I heard at PAFA (I had just graduated a month before), that a good painter can paint a colorful picture with mud.

In the apartment, I could only find a piece of cardboard, paper, carbon paper and a small brush and ink to work with, and created the "Interior/Exterior #1" collage seen below. The series continues to the present day, mostly in my mind, but occasionally in an actual painting. This series seeks to show interior reality, archetypes, subconscious, unconscious, where dreams arise... As mentioned above, all measurements are shown in inches!

Portraits and Figures

Over the years I have done a few portraits of family, and have as well worked on figurative art both representational and from my imagination. I have always wanted to do sculpture, but have found it difficult to get going. Maybe it will happen still. "The Bathers" painting is a painted stab at sculpture. ...

Earth - Landscape Series

In the mid 1970's, earth art became important and many in the art world were inspired by those ideas. Over the years there have been many works that are inspired by and connected to that genre. There is an awareness that there is only one earth, and we humans are messing it up... More recent works that reach for those ideals can be seen in the "Diptych & Triptych Series"

Diptych and Triptych Series

Interior reality, archetypes, subconscious, unconscious, where dreams arise...not much of that applies here, though Interior/Exterior Jungian references do pop up in some instances. Mostly just color, space, land, sea, light, air, and sky. And reaching for a calming vision...

Surrealism, Plus

The amazing paintings of Dali and Magritte may be the first art that grabs the eye of young aspiring painters. But then a different reality of aesthetics invades the young artist's consciousness. The meaning and significance of surrealism starts to fade.

It is replaced by....aesthetic physical sensual living reality...This section is kind of a grab bag of disparate images, my miscellaneous...Where ideas for series came to die...or petered out.

About Me

I spent 4 years at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts from 1971 to 1975, studying under Will Barnett, Morris Blackburn, Arthur DeCosta, Elizabeth Osborne, and Roswell Weidner. Elizabeth Osborne was an important inspiration! Osborne, Matisse, Diebenkorn, and Rothko... I shouldn't forget my first and main inspiration: Paul Cezanne, a truly sincere painter, in the mold of Titian...
